Project #4 Horseback riding as therapy |
Social workers in the Department of Social Services have discovered that therapeutic horseback riding is an invaluable tool to help many of the residents of the Samaria Regional Council, especially its youngest ones, to overcome disability and to deal with disorders brought on by stress.
Therapeutic horseback riding is successful because the movements of horses are parallel to human movements. Riding as therapy improves balance, coordination and flexibility in the rider. The therapy also improves the behavioral patterns of the rider, builds self-esteem and self-confidence and helps the rider develop greater sensitivity for others and for his surroundings. The Department of Social Services has opened a Regional Therapeutic Horseback Riding Ranch project to focus on serving children-at-risk, children with developmental delays and/or special needs, and children/families who suffer from post traumatic stress due to terrorism. The Ranch, conveniently located in the Barkan Industrial Area, currently has 10 horses and other farm animals such as sheep, goats and chickens. In addition to riding, the ranch helps children in therapy to learn to respect and appreciate animals as they feed and groom them and study their life cycle and care. The ranch also provides a venue for children and their families to interact as a unit and to socialize with other children and families.
